I don't know about you, but when I come on here I love these kinds of updates, either this style of 'my life in pictures' or people filming their daily schedule where I get to walk around with them... Probably has something to do with the fact that I'm a therapist, and I'll speak for myself, (all of us 🤫) I can be pretty nosey! So I thought I'd give it a try and remind myself of what I did in November...

1. I turned 31 🎂 I got a beautiful handmade card that I'll treasure forever, a new pair of slippers, and a new perfume which I'm currently wearing everyday! 🎈

2. I went to a "Sip and Paint" evening at Craftybear 🧸🎨 I loved it and was in a trance like state for most of the evening! I can't multitask, i.e paint and speak, so I wasn't the most social, but if you want to switch off and get something worthwhile at the end, I'd highly recommend! 🫟🍹

3. I met up with an old friend for a coffee, who I haven't seen in more than a decade, and it was like nothing had changed 💕☕ She brought me this lovely smelling gift set which was very thoughtful and smells incredible!!

4. I was treated to a lovely 3 course meal at The Ivy in London🍴🍲, and then went to sit front row practically at Moulin Rouge!!! ❤️💃🏻

5. 1 of my nail sets, I'm obsessed with gnomes so I think these were my fav set of the month 💅🏻 I'm trying to branch out more into self care/time for me, so this is where it started... I'm hoping to get into yoga or Pilates next... 🤸🏻‍♀️🧘🏻‍♀️ Watch this space 🤣

6. My huge fluffy baby! 🐶 She's been getting lots of love, as always, but also lots and lots of walks... (more than she's used to, bless her 😂) as I'm trying to get out more into the woods to destress and declutter my mind - plus I love all the autumn leaves 🍂

So that's me and my update! I'm going to try and do these kinds of posts more often in the future... Important reminder that these are my HIGHlights, the fun/exciting/heartwarming stuff... not my low/gloomy days, or stressful chaotic moments, etc - which of course most definitely still existed! 🫠

A few Mondays ago I completed Rewind Trauma Therapy Training ⏪📽️ ...and I received a certificate of completion earlier this week 🥰

This is something that I have planned to do for a while but due to recent developments in my practice, I decided to push the training forward so I can deliver it sooner - and I'm so glad I did!

Both myself and Karolina (@mindset_byk) had an unbelievable weekend in London for @david.bedrick's seminar on 'The Unshaming Way'

We had the privilege to sit in a room with very kind hearted and brave people, hear so many rich life stories, and witness so much vulnerability.

We have come away with so much new understanding on how to work in depth with shame and an even greater appreciation for humanistic work!

A huge thank you to @birkbeckuol for facilitating such an amazing event!!

Do you wanna know something I find interesting? 👀

Over time as a therapist you come to notice lots of things continuing to change who you are as a person, but every now and then you have a day like I've had today where it really just hits you in the face and you're a bit like... 'What??? Sorry? Who is this person?' 🤣

So here's my reflections ✍️...

1. I can now pause and enjoy the scenery (like in this first photo 🤪) without wanting to rush off and get to wherever I'm meant to be 🌅

2. I can now sit in a small and busy restaurant on my own without having to pick up my phone as a distraction 🤳🏼📵

3. I can do point 2 with ease... I'm not forcing myself or feeling uncomfortable sitting alone in my own company 👩

4. I can order a salad because I enjoy salad, not because it's the healthiest thing on the menu or has the least calories 🥗

5. I can eat the cake without feeling like I am undoing the 'good' in the salad 🍰

6. I actually enjoy moving my body and can see the benefits in walking other than to track my steps 👣

Just thought I'd share as I feel it is a prime example of how letting go of control can give you so much freedom and joy in life, and how it allows you to be much more present and connected. 🩷

I would imagine all the therapists here are nodding their heads along with me 😉

Even though I can say this and truly mean it, and even though you may already somewhat believe it... I appreciate it is extremely difficult to be completely vulnerable, real and honest with someone (and yourselves!)... and even if logically you know you'll be accepted, managing the feelings/felt experience of not being too much can be an entirely different thing!

So if you ramble in session, go off on tangents, say things and then instantly regret them, avoid certain topics, or fear being too honest, just know we're fully with you. We're not judging you, most often were relating to you or in awe that you're brave enough to 'go there'. We're routing for you the entire way.

And if you're quite reserved and still getting to grips with therapy, give yourself time and a pat on the back for being there in the first place - as much as we aim for it to feel safe and cosy, we know it's not the easiest place to be!!

So this week I turned the big 3️⃣0️⃣ 🎈

And if we're keeping it real (which we always do over here 🤪) it brought up a lot of different feelings for me...

So here's some reflections from reaching another milestone...

1. Genuine gratitude and excitement for being here for another spin 🌎
2. Love for all those around me who showed how much they care for me and recognizing the privilege I have to say this 💘
3. Excitement to see a few of my clients on the day (even though they had no idea... for obvious reasons 😂)
4. Pure happiness to get a new cuddly cow called Ethel 🐮
5. Even more happiness to be treated to a new tattoo matching with my best friend 💕
6. Feelings of fear for the future even though it's looking pretty bright ✨
7. Feelings of OMG I'm a 'serious' adult and I have no excuses for falling short anymore (even though this is total you know what 💩)
8. A bit of confusion and disorientation on the day trying to work out how I feel about it... And then realizing it's okay even in my position to not be very clear on the matter 🤷🏻

I don't know Jo personally, I am just so pleased with my personal and professional development that I now want to share her course EVERYWHERE because I truly believe all therapists should enquire about it. This course quite literally changed me as a practitioner entirely in the sense of my way of practice, my way of thinking, and what I can offer of myself to my clients.

She has truly been the best tutor I've had across my studies. She was so thorough, considerate, and the attention to detail in this course blew my mind. I gained and learned so, so, so much and I wish I could do it all over again!

I know I promised I'd post more in the summer break 🌞 (yeah, right 😂 not making that mistake again!) - I decided to procrastinate for WEEKS instead because I have been really busy with my practice (eternally grateful for that! 💕) and therefore it's not just been feasible for me to show the regular love to my Instagram 🙁 so... Here's my more realistic promise to pop up when I can... And to take a leaf 🌿 out of my own book and take the bloody pressure off of myself to keep on top of things over here... 🫠

But I have noticed I've really missed connecting with you all! So if I do manage to pop up on your feed and you see my post please feel welcome to message and say hi! Or pop a comment below 👋🏻 😊

If you want to get into journalling but something keeps getting in the way my tip is to bullet journal instead! Sometimes if you're feeling overwhelmed journalling can feel like a task moreso than a release, however if you bullet point what's in your mind it's a great starting point and still does the trick! ✍️

5 benefits to therapeutic journalling:
1. It can support your route to self discovery
2. Be a way to gain awareness of your experiences
3. A way to release built up tension and stress
4. A tool for healing and growth
5. Reduce overwhelm and calm your anxiety

A day off from being a therapist! ☀️ 📽️ 💕

Hello hello 👋 lovely people of Instagram ❤️... I'm sure you haven't noticed but I haven't posted on here in a looong time by my standards! And I thought it was about time I did, finding the time to do so has been tricky lately as I've been mega mega mega busy with work related stuff 🧠

So instead of trying to think of something cool to post like reflections or psych-ed (although if you don't unfollow me there will be more of this coming in the summer 🌞🤞) I thought I'd share a rare day off! I've had my Wednesday's free both this week and last week... Last week I got to go out for lunch with a good friend of mine who I hadn't seen since December 😳💀 and this week I managed to...

1. Get a breakfast muffin 🥞 🍳
2. Go to the cinema to see Inside Out 2 which I am beaming about, I thought it was such a fantastic film and a spot on portrayal of anxiety so if you haven't seen it yet GO GO GO! 🏃‍♀️
3. Lunch at Wagamamas 🍜😛
4. Pick up some eyeliner cos I'm on my last knockings 👀 👁️
5. Go on the hunt for Joshua Fletcher's new book but sadly no luck so will order on Amazon 📬
6. Bump into a family of swans 🦢 💕
7. Visit my babies 🐮 and one licked my hand ahhhhh!! ❤️
8. Coffee break ☕
9. Workout but was so knackered I forgot to take pic proof of the sweaty mess 😂
10. Make a Instagram catch up post and watch Supernatural prepping for back to work tomorrow 🖥️ 🛋️

2. Go to the cinema to see Inside Out 2 which I am beaming about, I thought it was such a fantastic film and a spot on portrayal of anxiety so if you haven't seen it yet GO GO GO! 🏃‍♀️
3. Lunch at Wagamamas 🍜😛
4. Pick up some eyeliner cos I'm on my last knockings 👀 👁️
5. Go on the hunt for Joshua Fletcher's new book but sadly no luck so will order on Amazon 📬
6. Bump into a family of swans 🦢 💕
7. Visit my babies 🐮 and one licked my hand ahhhhh!! ❤️
8. Coffee break ☕
9. Workout but was so knackered I forgot to take pic proof of the sweaty mess 😂
10. Make a Instagram catch up post and watch Supernatural prepping for back to work tomorrow 🖥️ 🛋️

What do you hide from the world? What parts of you bring you shame?

Quite often we reject the parts of ourselves that we don't like, or fear, or don't understand, and believe that by ignoring it it'll eventually go away... but let me ask you if this has worked so far?

I bet it hasn't. Surpressing ourselves, the parts we are uncomfortable with, our difficult/scary emotions, our quirks, and our perceived faults doesn't banish them out of existence. They begin to show up in other ways such as through our nervous system and/or, for example, symptoms of anxiety and depression.

We don't have to particularly like these parts or love them even, but giving them space to exist and to be acknowledged can sometimes be what you need to stop seeking external reassurance that you are enough.

When we can hold space for the hidden parts of ourselves we can begin to learn who we truly are, and then we don't need to try and figure it out through other people showing us. You won't need to seek recognition, validity, or acceptance from others because you will already hold that within yourself.

Maybe you're employed/self employed, a boss, manager or colleague, a SAHP, a mother/father, a daughter/son, a friend, a carer, an agony aunt...

We each have so many jobs and roles we try to fulfil on a daily basis and it is HARD. It is TIRING. And what makes it all the more difficult is when you're overstimulated, with all the tabs of your mind open, and someone assumes:

🤹 you're free to take on more work
🤹 you're not that busy
🤹 you have spare time
🤹 you can take 'insert responsibility here' on because you *usually* handle it

- or assumes anything about your life really, which let's face it... No one ever knows the full extent of because only YOU are living it 😬

And then in comes the self doubt and shame of...

🧠 'well, if it doesn't look like I'm busy I *should* be doing more!'
🧠 'I can't tell them no because that would be unkind'

... And ultimately what do we internalise? ='I'm not good enough' 💔

Final thought 💭
Setting boundaries with ourselves and knowing when enough is enough can feel like a chore in itself. I get that. It can be tempting to 'keep calm and carry on' because that is literally what society tells us to do! However, there is no shame in reaching your limits. You are not built to behave like a machine. You are always human first.

I bet if you wrote down all what you get done in a day you'd be surprised at how long that to do list is! 📃

There are two types of excitement that I know of in the world...

The 'pro' excitement that gives you your hopes, dreams, and the 'good' butterflies in your stomach... 🦋✨

And then there's the 'con' excitement that decides for you to back out, forget it, and gives you the knots and summersaults in your stomach... 😣

Fear can stop us in our tracks, if we let it. The fear of not fitting in, of being judged, of being seen, or embarrassed for trying something new 🙈

It takes bravery and risk to stand out and be different (also known as, yourself 🤪, because we are ALL unique underneath these protective identity layers 🎭)

If you could take the risk to be anything or anyone, who would you be? What would life feel like? What would change?

Therapist warning signs 😬❌

I was in two minds as to whether this post would be beneficial or not, however unfortunately as I hear of so many horror stories in therapy I felt it was important to make a post to help you have an idea of the basic ethics of counselling.

Let me know your thoughts below 💭 and if you have ever experienced these red flags (I know I have) I want to assure you that this is not what therapy is about.

I know plenty of ethical (and bloody brilliant) therapists who are a credit to this profession - don't let one experience put you off from getting the support you deserve ❤️👇

1. Oversharing - you know more about your therapist than they know about you

2. Behaviour - they try to be your friend or act inappropriately towards you

3. Communication - you don't feel listened to, they speak over you or interrupt you

4. Confidentiality - they discuss their work with other clients in your sessions

5. Environment - if your session is or has been disrupted by intruders

6. Boundaries - are not clear, are not being upheld or have not been negotiated

7. Time - they have a habit of being late to your sessions or cancelling with short notice

8. Safety - if you feel judged, shamed or do not feel safe for any reason

So as you might have seen on my stories at the weekend, Saturday night was @letstalk.cic first ever quiz night hosted by myself and my fellow directors Val and L. (missing @mindset_byk
but she was there in spirit ❤️)

We raised an incredible £455 which will go towards the provision of a free mental health support group 🎉 and had such a lovely evening shared with the people we know and love as well as new friends we got to meet.

We also had amazing music from the very talented @musicality.with.val 🎶

We are so grateful to everyone who came along to have a good time and show their support for a cause that is so important to us - thank you, thank you, thank you! 🥰

Meet Humphry, our friendly Halloween scarecrow who has kept our home safe and community entertained this month 🎃

I know that for many people, Halloween can feel quite freeing and like an escape from reality. Halloween is an opportunity every year where you get to let go, enjoy yourself, and embrace a fun, scary, creative side of you.

It can be that chance to feel socially accepted without worrying about being judged for how you look. It can help those who lack confidence to create a new identity or give those who struggle with anxiety a mask of bravery for dressing up as someone else. 🎭

So, I'm wondering, if you can relate and you get that boost of self esteem from being someone other than you, how good would it be if you could feel this way all the time, and not just for one day or night?

What's holding you back from showing these true sides of you in your everyday life? Where you don't worry about being judged for being yourself. What would change in your behaviour? Would you feel happier?

When we are so used to being in a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal (the highs and lows), it is extremely hard to break the patterns of your ways of thinking.

It becomes our inner instinct and it can give us a sense of control. We know what to expect. We understand the cycle and the routine. If we tried something new, wouldn't we feel unsafe?

This is the set of keys to my new counselling room - which I officially moved into this week 😁

For me, keys have always symbolised new beginnings. The chance for change, to embark on new adventures and explore new opportunities.

I have been a bit quieter on here lately as I have been soaking up all of the feelings that this can bring. The mix of excitement, nervousness, hope and pride.

I feel so humbled to be able to sit with some of my clients again and to be meeting some new ones, too. It truly is such an honour to be a part of someone's journey and to watch them grow. Unlocking their own new beginnings 🔑💘

Advice from a therapist: things to do after you have attended a counselling session 🌱

1. If it was a particularly tough session, let it be. Let go of any expectations of how you 'should' feel and accept how you do feel. Hold compassion for yourself as the flow of emotions wash over you.

2. Reflection is great. It is a powerful tool to encourage your self awareness, but not if it is forced. Take away any unnecessary self pressure for answers. Sometimes the session alone is enough.

3. Remember that therapy is hard work and it can take it's toll emotionally, mentally and physically. Invest in self care in whatever form that works best for you.

4. We are bound by confidentiality, but that doesn't mean that you are, too. It's a personal choice, but if someone who you trust knows you are seeing a therapist, talk it through with them. That is, of course, if you want to and after ensuring they are comfortable to listen.

5. Alternatively, if you benefit from it, journal. This can be brief notes of what you discussed or what felt significant. This can help you to gain insight into your provoked emotions and potentially give you further material for your following session. For those of you who keep on top of my instagram stories - this is the exciting news that I have been waiting to share! 😁

I am all set up and ready to go with my very own counselling room!! 🎉 I am now offering face to face sessions in Maylandsea, Essex 🌅

I will still be available for online and telephone sessions, but I am so excited to get back to working in person with my clients ❤️

🌅 1. Remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup and start to put aside some time for you, to do the things that you enjoy to help you relax

🌅 2. Check in with yourself and ask whether your stressors are all yours to carry. Are you taking on more responsibility than you need to be?

🌅 3. Engage in an activity that helps you to release your emotions and regulate your nervous system. This could be: exercise, breathing techniques, journaling, painting, etc

So this was me Wednesday morning, checking my camera was working and quickly swigging my tea before I clicked the link to begin my CPCAB Level 5 Diploma. ☕📷

It was SO good to get back in to a classroom environment (will have to adjust to it being virtual!) and meet so many like minded counsellors and therapists with similar interests! ☺️

Really excited for this new little adventure of mine and can't wait to make those connections and learn in depth about attachment theory ❤️

When your go-to is a 'yes':
👉 Every time someone asks you for help
👉 Every time someone asks you to work late
👉 Every time someone asks you to do anything, really

...then the thought and fear of saying 'no' is enough to stop you from even contemplating it. ❌

... But have you ever thought of what the outcome could be if you did say no? 🤔

Not the outcome of how uncomfortable and awkward you would feel...

(by the way it's totally normal to feel like this when it's completely out of your character!)

And not the panicked internal thoughts of:
💭 'but they'll want a reason why I said no'
💭 'I'll have to explain myself'
💭 'I'm not good at excuses'

- The outcome after all of these racing thoughts have passed. How your life could look, how your stress levels could change, how much more time, space and energy you could have?

Just something to keep in mind. You can ALWAYS say no. Especially if it brings you peace. ❤️
